The city of Campinas, the third most populous in the state of São Paulo, will host one of the traveling exhibitions of the 35th Bienal de São Paulo – choreographies of the impossible, in partnership with Sesc São Paulo. The show arrives in the city on June 6 and will remain there until September 8. Curated by Diane Lima, Grada Kilomba, Hélio Menezes and Manuel Borja-Villel, the exhibition was a success in 2023, receiving acclaim from both the public and critics.

The exhibition in Campinas will feature fourteen participants: Aline Motta, Aurora Cursino dos Santos, Januário Jano, Kamal Aljafari, Luana Vitra, Luiz de Abreu, MAHKU, Manuel Chavajay, Marilyn Boror Bor, Maya Deren, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, Quilombo Cafundó, Ubirajara Ferreira Braga and Zumví Arquivo Afro Fotográfico.

For the curators, it is crucial that the exhibition reaches more cities, transcending the limits of the Bienal Pavilion. According to them, “the debates proposed by the 35th Bienal cross countless territories around the world, so not restricting choreographies of the impossible to the Bienal Pavilion is extremely important for the work carried out”.

Andrea Pinheiro, president of the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, highlights the importance not only of bringing the choreographies of the impossible to a wider audience, but also of strengthening ties between cultural institutions. She says: “Taking the choreographies of the impossible to more cities and with a partner as important as Sesc is extremely important for strengthening Brazil’s cultural institutions. The exchange of experiences between audiences and institutions is one of the great assets of the Bienal de São Paulo’s traveling exhibitions.”

“Through this exhibition, Sesc and the Fundação Bienal are reiterating their partnership, which is mutually committed to fostering meaningful experiences through the enjoyment of contemporary visual arts, for a variety of audiences. Following on from an initiative of more than a decade, this traveling exhibition once again makes it possible for itinerant modules to travel to Sesc units in the countryside of São Paulo,” says Luiz Deoclécio Massaro Galina, director of Sesc São Paulo.

Actions with the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo team

During the traveling exhibitions, the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo, together with its partner institutions, carries out two fronts of educational work that complement each other. These are training actions with the city’s teams of mediators and educators, and outreach actions for the general public.

The educational publication of the choreographies of the impossible was divided into three different movements – or volumes – with content aimed at mediation and dissemination actions. The third movement, prepared especially for the traveling exhibitions program, was produced based on the practices carried out during the exhibition at the Pavilion and is distributed free of charge to those taking part in the actions.

In Campinas, in addition to a training course for local mediators, there will be a program open to the public, focusing on its educational publication and the show’s artistic projects. The program includes mediated and thematic visits, promoting dialogues about contemporary art, on June 6 and 7. The visits invite the public to explore the traveling exhibition at Sesc Campinas, with participants such as Luana Vitra, MAHKU, Quilombo Cafundó and Zumví Arquivo Afro Fotográfico. The activities propose reflections on poetic and pedagogical gestures, with artists such as Aline Motta, Aurora Cursino dos Santos and Luiz de Abreu, stimulating writing, orality and radical imaginations. Visits will be free for groups of up to 50 people per day and will be on a first-come, first-served basis until the maximum capacity is reached. There is no need to register.
