Varanda Bienal – No princípio era a roda…de samba, with Railídia

On Sunday, October 8, 2023, the concert No princípio era a roda…de samba, presented by Railídia, will take place from 3 pm to 5 pm at the Varanda Bienal, outside the Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion.

Railídia was born in the town of Almeirim, on the Lower Amazon River, in Pará. She is the granddaughter of João Valente de Carvalho, a rubber worker, musician and luthier in the city. Graduated in journalism in that state, she established strong links with samba circles in São Paulo in 1998, a year after arriving in the capital. Together with singer Fernando Szegeri and percussionist Paulinho Timor, she created in 1999 the foundations of the group Inimigos do Batente, a samba circle that is still active today and of which she is a member. She was a member (from 2004 to 2008) of the group Bando Afromacarrônico, created by musician Kiko Dinucci, and took part in the acclaimed CD “Pastiche Nagô”. In 2017 he released the CD Cangalha with a repertoire of mostly unreleased songs, songs in the public domain and original compositions. Currently, Railídia is dedicated to researching the repertoire of Brazilian music, especially sambas, batuques and songs from the north and southeast. With an intense interpretation style, forged in the samba circles, and seeking diversity of timbres, the singer develops shows and singing circles on various fronts.

No princípio era a roda…de samba is led by Railídia, in which she presents compositions that are little known to the general public, including samba singers from the Amazon, who will perform side by side with classics from the samba circles. Samba from São Paulo has a special place in this roda with songs by Paulo Vanzolini, Geraldo Filme, Toniquinho Batuqueiro and new authors such as Douglas Germano and Edu Batata. No princípio era a roda…de samba has a special place for the poetry of Gisa Nogueira, Dona Ivone Lara and Leci Brandão. The performance features an instrumental line-up with cavaquinho, seven-string guitar, surdo and pandeiro.
