Performance – Rubiane Maia – A língua sempre se dobra diante do inquestionável ou maldito. Livro-performance, capítulo VI – Vitória
On August 30, at 5 pm, A língua sempre se dobra diante do inquestionável ou maldito. Livro-performance, capítulo VI [The Tongue Bends Whenever It Faces What Is Unquestionable or What Has Been Cursed, Book-Performance, Chapter VI], a performance by Rubiane Maia presented in collaboration with Jamile Cazumbá, will take place at the Museu de Arte do Espírito Santo (MAES), as part of the traveling exhibition of the 35th Bienal de São Paulo – choreographies of the impossible in Vitória.
The Book-Performance is a long-term project that has been in development since 2018, structured around performative actions presented in chapters. Utilising a unique methodology, the artist proposes carefully crafted actions in response to autobiographical texts that explore transgenerational memory, deeply rooted in issues of gender and race.
The sixth chapter delves into the complex relationship between language and belonging, emphasising the struggle of the “self” with the body-language and tongue-language. From this perspective, the artist highlights a strand of hair as a powerful line of escape and resistance, reclaiming the stories of Black women’s braided hair, which encapsulate the memory of their ancestors who ingeniously transported rice seeds to the Americas during the transatlantic crossing. This chapter focuses on rice, specifically the species Oryza glaberrima, belatedly recognised as a plant native to the African continent, its presence and cultivation in colonial Brazil, and its subsequent disappearance.
