Cozinha Ocupação 9 de Julho – MSTC – Panel and workshop with Instituto Comida e Cultura

On Saturday, November 25, at 4 pm, the Instituto Comida e Cultura (ICC) and the Cozinha da Ocupação 9 de Julho – MSTC will welcome the public for a chat about food, its impacts and the relevance of food education from a decolonial perspective from early childhood. This will be followed by a cooking workshop filled with the history, food and culture of Brazil’s native peoples, with preparations using manioc and its derivatives, in which all participants will be able to collaborate and taste at the end of the activity.

Drawing a parallel with this year’s theme for the Bienal, the initiative seeks to reveal possible paths in the “choreography of the impossible”. Bela Gil, co-founder of the Instituto Comida e Cultura, reveals that she has found this edition of the Bienal to be an important space for valuing previously marginalized populations and other perspectives on Brazilian culinary history and culture. “Understanding the importance of food in preserving different cultures is crucial for the ecology of food systems and for changing our production and consumption practices,” she says.

Formed by five educators and activists, the Instituto Comida e Cultura aims to raise food awareness from early childhood through emancipatory education to promote more ecological and healthy food systems.

The MSTC – Movimento Sem Teto do Centro was born in the city of São Paulo (2000) and works to guarantee the right to housing, health, education and culture for low-income families. The 9 de Julho Occupation is one of the buildings managed by this movement.
